I'm a mom of two tweens (age 10 and 12). I have been in the natural products industry for over 12 years helping nutrition and beauty companies with marketing and branding. In 2007, because of my daughters, I recognized an enormous hole in the industry for natural products that were safe, effective and age appropriate.
A true labor of love. I knew If I could not find any products for my girls there were other naturally savvy moms in the same situation. Today we know so much about the negative effects of chemicals and do everything we can to keep our families safe. In 2008 the Environmental Working Group did the first ever study on teens around the country testing them for chemical exposure. They found many chemicals in their blood and urine that are only found in personal care products. The study suggests that girls are susceptible to even trace levels of chemicals due to the delicate changes happening in their bodies during puberty. While I will let the experts hash out the “how much is harmful” issue, I wanted to focus on products that would not only be free of chemicals but deliver delicious skin loving natural ingredients in an age appropriate way.
With a limited budget I have had to get creative, fist reaching out to existing newsletter, facebook and twitter followers with promotions and such.
I love bloggers because I feel they are somewhat like me, a little guy in a big Proctor and Gamble world. But I have seen a big shift in the blog world that has concerned me. Four years ago bloggers seemed more passionate about the products they shared. Today it seems there is a competition on getting free stuff and the passion has gone by the wayside. It used to be that I evaluated a blogger based on passion, desire and their blogs overall theme and message. If they had a daughter that was a happy bonus. Today’s blog world has been a bit difficult and dangerous to navigate. Because of it I have pulled back my outreach and I suspect many small brands are in a similar situation. There are only so many hours in a day and blog outreach can take up a tremendous amount of time. As a company with product and overhead, we must focus on ROI (Return on investment) in order to survive. I find myself constantly reminded that you can’t be everything to everybody. Brands as well as bloggers need focus. Identify your customer and message and be true to it.
