6 Ways to Go Green for Back to School April Davis

6 Ways to Go Green for Back to School
By April Davis for Green Goes Simple
When I was a kid, the very best thing about a new school year was all the new stuff that went with it: new pencils, new notebooks and new clothes. Come late August, you went shopping for all the supplies -- regardless of what was left over from last June.
But times have changed, and so should the back-to-school routine. Maydelle Fason, a green-living mother of two and a former horticulturist, offers some tips for preparing your kids while protecting the environment.
Clothing Swap
About that new wardrobe ... skip it! The best way to outfit the little ones is a friendly neighborhood clothing swap. It’s a win-win: The kids get new-to-them styles and parents avoid the madness of back-to-school shopping (and even better, they save money!). If new duds are a must, Fason suggests buying clothing that is made from natural fibers and manufactured sustainably.
My Box Is Metal
Bring back the 1970s by giving your kid a retro lunch box instead of a disposable bag to tote back to school. Better yet, use pretty, insulated lunch sacks made from recycled materials. For sandwiches or snacks, opt for easy-to-clean, reusable cloth bags or sturdy reusable containers.
Getting There
With schools cutting back on bus service to lower costs, many parents are faced with few transportation alternatives. Fason lives in New York City and is able to take her daughter to school via subway. (As a bonus, the two read books on the way.) If public transportation isn’t an option for you, try riding bikes to school or organizing a carpool with other parents.
I'm Thirsty!
It's important to keep kids hydrated, and sending your child to school with a reusable bottle keeps trash out of landfills. Make it even more fun by letting her pick it out herself!
Still Useful
Resist the urge to buy all-new school supplies. (Junior's crayons don’t need a perfectly pointy tip to create his masterpieces). Gently used binders and book bags can easily last a second -- or third -- year. And investing in sturdy, simple backpacks that go the distance means you can skip that hot-today-gone-tomorrow celebrity product (sorry, Justin Bieber!). For supplies that must be replenished -- like paper -- look for post-consumer recycled options.
Increase Your Impact
Greening your children’s back-to-school routine is a great start. But your best move is to encourage local administrators to reduce, reuse and recycle at school. Ask them to email rather than send paper notes home, and encourage an all-school recycling program. Be the spark that gets your school going!

Can you tell us who PJ is? I'm a very busy mom, wife, teacher and a Publisher Mom for Macaroni Kid. I've been married for 11 years and have a 4 year son. I've also been teaching for the past 14 years. I've been in Maryland since 1995 prior to Maryland I lived in Texas, where I went to school and Wisconsin, where I grew up. I enjoy living in Maryland. My family and I enjoy go to the beach and we go a lot of amusement parks. :)
Can you tell us what Macaroni Kids is? Macaroni Kid is a total FREE newsletter that is delivered to your inbox, once a week. It has articles ranging from Back to School readiness to Autism/Special Need to National Creamsicile Day. Plus, we list events that are happening in our area including those that are more national. We also have giveaways for products and concert/play tickets.
How did it get started and when? Macaroni Kid is located in 44 states and some international. It was started by 3 friends out of New York. Who had this idea about finding events and things to do with their families. Here is a link to their information. It is fun!
http://germantown.macaronikid.com/about/
How hard is it to run one?As with all businesses one has to put time into it but it isn't that hard.
Do you actually make money as a owner? I have started. :) We sale advertising space on our site and the more subscribers we have the easier it is to explain that they need to advertise with us.
Is this your personal business or a franchise? It would probably be considered a franchise. They are located in all different areas and it is easy to sign up to become a Publisher Mom-if there isn't one in your area.
How could someone start there on and what
are the cost to run one? First, in your town you need to see if there is any other publishing moms. I picked my town and a neighboring town because I was familiar with the area. Then you can talk to another Publishing mom, if you know any or just contact me at pjf@macaronikid.com and I can put you in touch with the Headquarters in New York. We can answer any questions. You can also go to my site at www.germantown.macaronikid.com and click on Become a Publisher Mom
http://germantown.macaronikid.com/becomepublishermom/
With a business online Bloggers are becoming
more and more recognized do you work with
them and if so in what capacity and why? I haven't worked with any yet....your my first but I can see where they would work to benefit both of with things like reviewing products...sharing ideas...etc.
I see you have ads on the site can you tell me
why businesses would want to advertise with
you and what it runs and what they get from it? We are sending emails to families that are self-subscribing to our newsletters. They want to have more information and are interested in getting what advertisers are selling. We are geared to one marker which is Families and Kids. We also have contacts where some advertisers can cross promote with someone else. Plus, we use other social media like Facebook and Twitter. Plus, it is entirely online. The newsletter is delivered to the inbox and then stays on the web till the next newsletter. However, we can update events or ads instantly.
How do you promote the business and where? I promote it through attending Kid/Family Focus events. Our biggest promoting is done through word of mouth and clicking on the share the newsletter button when the email is received.
Do you do events and do you have to pay the
fees or does the company? I do events and I pay for them or I do cross promoting where I advertise for the event as well.
How many hours a week or month do you work? Probably about 15 hours
Do you have help? No, not yet. :)
How hard is to to get advertisers to choose to
work with you? If the product is family and kid friendly it should be a great choice to work with us. It is an instant market with families that are self subscribed to the newsletter because they want to receive the information.
Can Dads do this as well? YES, we would love to have more dads here to publish.
Can you tell us what we would find on the site Please. My site is www.germantown.macaronikid.com and the national site is
http://national.macaronikid.com/
Can you share one thing we do not know about you
and one thing we do not know about the company.
I will admit it that I'm a gamer and I love Farmville and all those Facebook games. About the company that our mascot is an adorable dog. :)

A MOMent with... Heather with Arbonne

Hello.
I have always taken good care of my skin and when I tried a sample of our Nutriminc RE9 anti-aging set after my sister recommended it, I was anxious to see if it the products would produce the results they said it would. I noticed a difference and a glow the first time I tried it and after I handed out some samples to friends and they all called to order, I thought I should take a look at this business. My family also had these mysterious bumps on the backs of our arms and my kids had them on their cheeks, nothing ever worked to make them go away but after arbonnizing our home, switching to our pure, safe and beneficial products, using our shower washes and lotions, they disappeared within a week.
I have been so fortunate to be at home with my kids, my husband is a carpenter but that doesn't come without sacrifice. I also suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome so a 9-5 job isn't an option for me but with Arbonne, I can work a few hours a week and earn a full time plus income. I not only started my business to help retire my husband early and take advantage of travel opportunities but I am hoping to open a yoga/wellness center especially geared to children and families who might not be able to afford such services and let everyone get the great advantages of wellness.
Arbonnes nutrition and wellness products have been great for my fatigue and last January we released an immunity booster drink that I love.
Of course I love our products but my favorite part of my business is getting other started and on their way to fulfill their dreams. When I started my business I was asked, what are your dreams, something I think as we get older we don't think about, especially busy Moms. always taking care of someone else. That is when my vision became clearer and it excites me to help others realize theirs.
I guess that's a start, let me know what else you'd like.

Moms views on..... VeggieTales
Ok are you a Veggie Tale fan?
I am and I have been since my daughter was
around 12 as she started to work in a Daycare
and she fell in Love with them. Which caused
me to sit down and listen to them as well and
how could you not fall in Love with them as
the charactesr as so cute. I Love the Cucumber.
I also Love that the DVDs teach lessons and the
songs are so catchy and just plain fun to listen to.
I was so excited when I contacted Veggie Tales
about working with me and they said yes as I
would be able to share them with my son Charlie
and he would be able to learn some important lessons
in a fun way. So I waited and finally the video arived
and I let my son open it and he was so happy he had to
play it write away which was fine with me as it teaches
sharing and we have been working on this. So we grabbed
our drinks, blankies and popcorn and cuddled on the couch
and let me tell you the whole time it was on he did not move
at all. Then hubby came in and we had to rewatch it and I
noticed during the movie both my son and I where humming
along to the songs so I knwo ti was a huge hit. His favorite
part of the movie was the Pirates. I Loved the song
Where Oh Where Is My Hairbrush as mine is always missing.
If you have not had a chance to watch this video Please do as

A MOMent with... Mandie from Taking time for mommy.
Who is Mandie? I'm a homeschooling mom of two beautiful little girls, I'm a wife to an amazing man, and I'm overworked and underpaid. :) I run the office end of our family landscaping business and I'm currently working on writing a book.
Can you tell us about your magazine and when
it was started and why? I started it about 5 years ago when I decided to stay home with my children. I needed an outlet and that was it.
How hard is it to maintain it? Very! But luckily I have some amazing contributors.
How much time does it take to run? I work on it every day but Sunday :)
Can you tell us how the site can benefit a blogger or a
direct seller and why you think this. I have blogging tips and will be adding even more for bloggers. I have a weekly stumble list where bloggers can add their posts. On my community I have a group specifically for bloggers. I also have a group for WAHMs and everyone is welcome to advertise their businesses (as long as they aren't spamming)
How do you feel bloggers help or hinder a business? HELP, bloggers are inexpensive advertising and PR companies know this.
You have both a blog and a community why both? They two completely different entities. One is packed with articles the community is for everyone to make friends and promote themselves
Which is easier to maintain? The blog. The community is getting an incredible amount of hits every month but people like to read and not interact. That is what the community if for, I wish more people would utilize it.
Tell us about Promotional Book Tours? I started it to eventually promote my books but decided to use my resources to help other authors as well.
Where do you find the Authors to work with? I'm in several writing groups and I have authors coming to me.
Who besides yourself reviews the books? I have about 30 bloggers.
Would this help a blogger build there stats? Definitely. There are a lot of book lovers out there! A lot of people like to learn about new books and win then.
What types of books do you promote and why? It depends on what the authors bring me. I won't promote erotica.
If you use a Blogger to review a book what do you
look for in that blogger and what happens if they do
not review a book they say they will review? I look for someone who is passionate about books and is a consistent blogger, If they don't review then they won't be able to request anymore books.
How do you handle a review of a product you just did not like
or the company did not do what they said they would do or did not
send what they where supposed to? I always communicate with the sponsor. If it was something I didn't like I always give them the option of me not posting.
Do Blog Hops help or hinder bloggers? Help, the more you get your name out there the better.
Is Facebook or Twitter better to promote on and why? I utilize both and get great results.
If a blogger wants to start a review business what would you tell
them and why? Make sure you are consistent and honest.
What kiind of stats should they need? I think I had a thousand hits in a month when I started and found companies to work with me. Now I have that and more in a day.
Do you have a favorite blog and why? SimplyStacie.net I love her book and product reviews and she is a great resource for bloggers.
It's Mandie, Web sites are

Finding the “Me” in Motherhood
Finding the “Me” in Motherhood
By Elizabeth Hurchalla for Life & Beauty Weekly
Whether you’re a mom or not, at some point you’ve likely put yourself on the back burner while turning your attention to the needs of those around you. But moms know this feeling better than anyone: With kids, life isn’t only about you anymore. That can be an amazing thing, but if you’re losing yourself in the process of raising a family, it’s time to refocus.
“Women tend to slowly give up more and more of themselves to accommodate their family’s needs,” says Tiffany Howsam, a Los Angeles-based family therapist who specializes in postpartum depression and anxiety. “They think that’s what they’re supposed to do.” Over time, you get so used to focusing on your children that every decision -- from what’s for dinner to your next vacation -- becomes about pleasing others.
Fortunately, you can take care of your family without losing sight of who you are, says Howsam. Here’s how to find a balance:
1. Take a step back.
Look at your situation from the outside. Are you treating yourself with the same TLC that you devote to your family? If you feel resentful because of your never-ending to-do list, or if you’re always exhausted or can’t remember the last time you did something just for you, you might be spending too much energy on others and not enough on yourself, says Howsam.
2. Set limits.
To be a supermom, you don’t have to be Supermom. “Women want to do it all perfectly,” notes Howsam. But if you volunteer with the PTA, put in a full day’s work, shuttle your kids to karate lessons, coach soccer and whip up a gourmet three-course family dinner every day, there’s no time left for you. So cut yourself some slack! The next time you consider taking on an activity, think about what you have to give up to do it. If you feel uneasy or you get overwhelmed, just say no.
3. Schedule time to do what you love.
Maintaining a sense of self requires at least a few hours each week of actually doing something just for you, says Howsam. “Think about the things you enjoyed before you had kids,” she suggests. “Or explore something you’ve always wanted to try, whether it’s gardening, reading a new book, getting a pedicure, going to a dance class or having coffee with a friend.” Plan your activity ahead of time and write it (in ink!) in your day planner so you’re more likely to stick to it.
4. Treasure the little things.
Doing something for yourself doesn’t always have to be a grand gesture: Creating special moments for yourself each day works too. Try picking three things that feel restorative to you and do them daily, suggests Howsam. Maybe it’s drinking tea in your favorite mug, taking five minutes of quiet alone time each morning or listening to your favorite music in the car rather than Barney’s greatest hits. Even just a minute of “you time” is better than nothing.
5. Lose the guilt.
When you say no or do
things for yourself, you’re not being selfish, maintains Howsam. “You’re
watching out for your own mental health, which includes taking time to
recharge,” she says. You’re also setting a good example for your children and
partner by letting them know you’re important too. And by taking time for
yourself, you become a more engaged caregiver, which leads to a happy,
well-adjusted family.

Family Friendly Ways to Save Water
Green Goes Simple: Family Footprints
Family-friendly Ways to Save Water
By Rachel Bertsche for Green Goes Simple
Water conservation is one of the most important elements of an eco-friendly home -- yet it’s among the hardest to impress upon your kids.
“It’s a really abstract thing,” says Christine Escobar, founder of Green Parent Chicago and environmental blogger for The Huffington Post. “When you flush the toilet and that water is just gone, children don’t really think about or understand how it is connected to the water near your city or state.”
Still, the better your little ones grasp the value of water -- and why saving it is so important -- the more conscientious they’ll be about not wasting it. Try these tips to help your kids understand the need to conserve water.
First, explain what happens to H2O when you flush the toilet or run the faucet. “Understanding that water needs to be cleaned and then goes into local lakes or rivers helps kids grasp why we want to conserve water in the first place,” explains Escobar. If you’re not quite sure of the wastewater process, books like One Well: The Story of Water on Earth by Rochelle Strauss, and Jen Green’s Why Should I Save Water? can do the teaching for you.
To drive the point home, Escobar says the best thing you can do is reacquaint your kids with the great outdoors through local nature centers. “When they really see the wildlife that’s in the lakes or ponds or rivers and get a chance to interact with the animals, then they’ll understand that, wow, this is their home and they need to keep it safe,” she says. “Children are naturally very compassionate, so it’s about creating that relationship” between them and how they affect the planet.
Once your kids understand the urgency of saving this most precious resource, the next step is to show them just how much water they could waste in a given day. “Illustrate how much you use by leaving the tap on for two minutes and collecting it in a bucket while they brush their teeth,” says Escobar. Presenting kids with the actual amount of wasted water will help them understand that their actions really make a difference.
Now that you’ve alerted your kids to the problem, help them find a solution. Escobar uses reminder stickers with her own children, which she says have worked wonders. “They’re little friendly reminders not to leave the tap on when you’re brushing your teeth and to turn it off while you’re doing the dishes,” she says. “We put them on the walls above the sinks. You can even have the kids decorate their own with little fish. It’s incredibly helpful.”
During the warm-weather months, leaving a small bucket in the corner of the shower is a helpful reminder for kids to collect water that would otherwise go down the drain. “Using what’s collected to water the garden is a great conservation method, and seeing the bucket in the shower is a great visual cue for kids.”
Another option? Start a family challenge! Show your children the water bill and propose a family initiative to reduce that bill for the next month. “Offer a family incentive if you meet your goal,” suggests Escobar. When your bill comes back lower than last month, everybody wins!
Rachel Bertsche is a Web producer, blogger and journalist who lives in Chicago. She’s written for O, The Oprah Magazine, Marie Claire, Every Day With Rachael Ray, Outside and Fitness. Her first book, MWF Seeking BFF, will be out next year.
