There aren't many children who get excited about bedtime. For many parents this can be a very trying time for them and huge source of frustration as their children beg and plead to "just stay up a little longer". Do you deal with this frustrating task and wish that there was a way to make bedtime fun for your young children?
As parents we know that establishing a bedtime for a child is important so they can be well rested and adjusted the next day. They may even have to attend daycare or need to be alert to do educational work at school. Children do not always see things the same way we adults do. You may find that you are explaining to your children over and over the benefits of having a consistent bedtime.
Have you ever put your child to bed and while watching a movie with your spouse or reading, relaxing or talking on the phone your child comes back downstairs. This can be very frustrating. Is there anything that can be done? Well, you could make bedtime fun.
How in the world can you make bedtime fun for a child? I know that may seem impossible but it really can be done. Establish your own bedtime fun ritual. There are many ways to do this. You could purchase and read chapter books near bedtime so they are waiting to hear what happens the next day and they only get to hear it if they behave and go to sleep after the story.
Audio books are a short cut to bedtime story time that can be enjoyed by you and your children. There are so many different stories available that can temporarily whisk you and your children to another land, place, time or world.
Hold a sleep contest and give a small inexpensive prize to the child who goes to sleep first. You could purchase these prizes right from your local discount or dollar store. Designate a certain day of the week for the contest. To be allowed to participate in the contest your child must behave, be in their pajamas with their teeth brushed and then go to bed on time. When they awake in the morning you can give the winner their prize.
You could also have a certain day of the week, maybe Friday or Saturday to be their stay up day, where they get to stay up for a few hours later than usual and of course this is earned by their good behavior at bedtime all week long.
If you create a chart and put it on display where the children can easily see it, your children may be motivated to behave at bedtime because they can see their daily behavior charted and it reinforces to them that they will not be rewarded for bad behavior.
These are just a few things you can do to make bedtime fun for your young children. Get creative and bedtime drama may become a thing of the past
